Some 94% of consumers planning to buy a home in 2026 would change their plans if rates don't drop below 6%, a new report says.

Lenders want to build long-term partnerships with originators ahead of an upcoming boost in production volume this year.

The AARP Foundation filed a class action lawsuit against Celink, Finance of America Reverse and Carrington Mortgage Services claiming that they unlawfully charged home equity conversion mortgage borrowers prohibited fees.

Ongoing declines to interest rates boosted refinance originations in the fourth quarter of 2025 while purchase-mortgage lending looks to have fallen as part of a seasonal trend.

"The competitive environment for refinances was, quite frankly, stronger than what I’ve seen historically in an interest rate decline," said David Spector, chairman and CEO of Pennymac Financial Services.

The proposals would preempt 12 state laws designed to discourage banks from inflating escrow-account balances as a source of interest-free funding.

"We’re not going to destroy the value of their homes so that somebody that didn’t work very hard can buy a home," President Trump said Thursday. "We’re going to make it easier to buy. We’re going to get interest rates down, but I want to protect the people that for the first time in their lives feel good about themselves."

Many student loan borrowers are facing repayment requirements for the first time in years.

Interest rates on mortgages are expected to remain in a narrow band in the near future.
