HARP Production Slows as Interest Rates Edge Higher, Focus Turns to Homebuyers

Mortgage lenders saw a noticeable decline in refinancing of underwater Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac mortgages during the second quarter of 2013, according to a new Inside Mortgage Trends analysis of mortgage-backed securities data. Seasonal Factors Push Delinquencies Higher

Mortgage delinquencies increased by nearly 10 percent in June compared with the previous month, following five months of declines, according to Lender Processing Services. The increase is seen as a seasonal move, with delinquencies expected to continue to decline over the long-term. Nonbanks Continue Gaining Ground in Mortgage Servicing; Bank of America Slips to Third Place

Once upon a time, in the third quarter of 2005, Countrywide Financial became the first company to amass a mortgage servicing portfolio of over $1 trillion. Just three years later, the company would be consumed by a hungry giant, Bank of America, which in the process became the first – and only – $2 trillion mortgage servicer. During the second quarter of 2013, BofA gave up its chair in the $1 trillion servicing club, reporting a 16.7 percent drop in its portfolio that left the company with “just” $988.6 billion in servicing.
