Mortgage Banking Profit Down Slightly in 3Q14

Mortgage banking profitability declined in the third quarter despite an uptick in net income on servicing, according to the Mortgage Bankers Association’s latest performance report. Average firm pretax income declined by 9.6 percent, from $1.58 million in the second quarter to $1.43 million in the third, the MBA reported. Commercial banks and thrifts reported slightly higher valuations on their mortgage servicing rights during the third quarter of 2014, but they continued to shed MSR, according to a new Inside Mortgage Trends analysis of call-report data. Downpayment requirements play a larger role than interest rates in whether a potential borrower can afford a mortgage, according to new research from staff at the Federal Reserve Bank of New York.
