Market Expected to Easily Absorb Auction Of ING’s Vintage Non-Agency MBS

January 17, 2014
The Dutch State Treasury Agency this week is auctioning $4.3 billion in non-agency MBS once held by ING, which will leave the government entity still holding about $2.2 billion of securities. The sale represents less than 1.0 percent of outstanding non-agency MBS, and it was expected to have little impact on pricing for these assets. Bids on the portfolio were...

Non-Prime Lender Citadel Hopes to Be A $1 Billion Securitizer – Eventually

January 17, 2014
Citadel Loan Servicing, arguably the largest active originator of nonprime mortgages, plans to move forward with its first non-agency MBS by the middle of this year. Company founder and CEO Dan Perl told Inside MBS & ABS that the firm has already picked a custodian as well as what he calls a “watchdog” to review the collateral. The watchdog in question appears to be Clayton Holdings, said one source, but officials at both firms would not discuss the matter. Perl declined...

Jumbo MBS Market Might Revive In First Quarter? Don’t Bet On It

January 10, 2014
Jumbo MBS issuance isn’t likely to revive in the first quarter, and some market participants are starting to wonder if any new deals will get done by the end of March. With January almost at the mid-point there is talk that issuers – both active and wannabes – are shifting to a strategy of staying in the jumbo business as whole-loan traders as opposed to issuers. For now, it appears...

New FHFA Director Watt Delays DeMarco’s Planned MBS Fee Hike, Private Capital Remains Crowded Out

January 10, 2014
Some lawmakers and non-agency interests are not happy with new Federal Housing Finance Agency Director Mel Watt’s move this week to delay a planned 10 basis point increase in the government-sponsored enterprises’ MBS guaranty fees. Two days after he was sworn in to a five-year term as FHFA director, Watt followed through on a promise he made late last month to delay then FHFA Acting Director Edward DeMarco’s announced 10 bps g-fee hike. Watt promised sellers at least 120 days before implementing any changes. The g-fee increase was set...

Jumbo MBS Issuance Started 2013 With a Bang, Ended in a Whimper

January 3, 2014
Just three jumbo mortgage-backed securities were issued in the fourth quarter of 2013, according to a new ranking and analysis by Inside Nonconforming Markets. During the second quarter of the year, one deal was issued every week, on average. Investor demand for jumbo MBS plummeted after interest rates started to increase in May. A number of the deals that were completed in the second half of the year received minimal attention from investors, with at least one planned issuance scrapped ... [Includes one data chart]

Jumbo MBS Execution Dominated by Fed’s QE

January 3, 2014
The Federal Reserve’s asset purchases will continue to dominate execution of jumbo mortgage-backed security issuance until the significant purchases of agency MBS are stopped, according to analysts at Bank of America Merrill Lynch. The tapering of the Fed’s quantitative easing beginning this month will do little to end the advantages agency MBS have over new jumbo MBS. “We believe that the Fed’s ‘non-economic’ bid for agency MBS contributes to the distorted price advantage for agency MBS ...

News Briefs

January 3, 2014
Fitch Ratings recently released new loan-loss model criteria for jumbo mortgage-backed securities. The rating service said the new loss criteria could result in higher credit enhancement requirements for new jumbo MBS. The new criteria assign a penalty to loans sourced through non-retail channels. The rating service will now include a borrower’s liquid reserves as a variable in its loss modeling. Fitch will apply a 25 percent haircut to the reported reserve amount based on the volatility ... Market Absorbs $5.1 Billion in Vintage Non-Agency MBS from ING Holdings

December 20, 2013
Non-agency MBS investors showed strong appetite for $5.1 billion in vintage securities that were auctioned last week as part of the Dutch government’s efforts to unwind a bailout of ING. Industry analysts said the successful sale shows that demand for high-yielding, low-priced bonds remains strong. The MBS sold by the Dutch State Treasury Agency were largely backed by option adjustable-rate mortgages, according to Interactive Data, a firm that tracks fixed-income products. ING and the DSTA didn’t provide pricing information on the sale. According to talk among traders before the auction, Interactive Data said...

REIT MBS Holdings Continue Declining in Third Quarter, But Non-Agency Portfolio Was Up

December 13, 2013
Real estate investment trusts that focus on investing in MBS held a combined $306.3 billion of mortgage securities in portfolio at the end of the third quarter, according to a new Inside MBS & ABS analysis. That total was down 6.4 percent from the end of June, as the industry has lost nearly all of the huge volume of MBS that were acquired in early 2012.
