Nonbanks, Large Lenders Gain Share in Originations
The biggest players in the mortgage market continue to increase their share of production, according to a new ranking and analysis by Inside Mortgage Finance.
The five largest lenders produced 21.7% of total originations in the first half of this year, after accounting for 21.5% of originations in all of 2025. Four of the five largest lenders are nonbanks.
Nonbanks overall had a 66.3% share of originations in the first half of 2026, up from a 65.7% share for all of 2025.
Nonbank originations increased by 30.3% on an annual basis in the first half of 2026 while bank production was up 22.2%. Large banks (those with more than $50.0 billion in assets) actually outperformed competing banks and nonbanks, increasing originations by 34.3% on an annual basis in the first half of 2026.
