Washington Mutual late last week announced a realignment of its major business units that includes a new executive in charge of its huge mortgage banking operation. Under the new configuration, WaMu’s mortgage business will be grouped with the thrift’s retail banking, consumer insurance and retail brokerage units. Deanna Oppenheimer, an 18-year veteran at the company, will head this retail banking group.
