A proposed change in accounting rules could have a huge impact on the mortgage lending industry by causing lenders and secondary market agencies to carry loan securitizations on their books. Major mortgage industry groups are lobbying the Financial Accounting Standards Board to make major changes in a recent proposal it issued on the treatment of qualifying special-purpose entities, or QSPEs, an arcane accounting rule that is of major significance to the mortgage banking industry.
