The Department of Housing and Urban Development has asked FHA lenders to be more flexible and accommodating when installment payments for September or October arrive late or are lost in the mail. Although the federal government has allowed mail to be transported by air, mail delays are expected to continue in the short term as a result of the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks in New York and Washington DC, according to Mortgagee Letter 2001-24.
