Inadequate agency oversight has placed the Department of Housing and Urban Development’s affordable housing program for policemen and teachers at high risk for noncompliance and abuse, an internal audit has found. HUD’s poor supervision of the Officer Next Door/Teacher Next Door program has resulted in homebuyer fraud and abuse and FHA losses totalling $734,800 in ineligible or unearned discounts, according to the HUD Inspector General’s Office.
