Back in 1997 Fannie Mae surprised corporate observers when it named a little-known deputy attorney general at the Justice Department to be the GSE’s new vice chair. At the time, it was far from clear what Jamie Gorelick would bring to the GSE other than strong ties to the Democratic Party and a largely legal background.
