With the three-month mortgage forbearance period about to expire next month, servicers of loans sold to Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac have the additional discretion to extend mortgage relief to hurricane stricken borrowers for more than 12 months. Both government-sponsored enterprises allow extensions – Freddie up to 12 months and Fannie up to 18 months – of their mortgage relief policies for borrowers in areas ravaged by Hurricanes Katrina and Rita.
