Industry giant Washington Mutual has been battered by bad news recently. Last week it announced that its huge mortgage banking operation essentially made no profit during the second quarter, after making $531 million in the previous period. The company continues to cut jobs and will discontinue its commercial mortgage-backed securitization platform.
