The slowdown in mortgage production and tighter profit margins are expected to spark a new wave of industry consolidation featuring some players that have customarily steered away from growth through merger. Most notably, Countrywide Financial says it will consider acquiring mortgage operations that company officials expect to see on the auction block in growing numbers.
