A number of political observers were left scratching their heads this week after GOP lawmakers in the House came to the defense of Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac, warning the chief of the Department of Housing and Urban Development that tough new affordable housing goals could hamper the performance of the government-sponsored enterprises.
