Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac combined for $1.49 trillion in “new business” during 2002, breaking the record of $1.09 trillion in annual volume set in 2001. The two government-sponsored enterprises accounted for 59.3 percent of last year’s huge $2.51 trillion in mortgage originations. That was up from 52.9 percent for all of 2001.
