Wells Fargo was the top mortgage producer in 2001 according to recently tabulated Home Mortgage Disclosure Act statistics for last year. Combining several Wells Fargo entities, the company reported $189.9 billion in mortgage production during 2001, including mortgage originations and purchases. That was good for an 8.0 percent market share of the total $2.432 trillion in mortgage transactions reported last year.
