Secretary Melquiades Martinez of the Department of Housing and Urban Development this week announced a single-family tax credit plan and a joint public-private downpayment program to help boost affordable housing and homeownership across the country. Introduced at the Mortgage Bankers Association of America’s National Housing Summit in Washington, DC, both initiatives are at the core of the Republican housing platform and count among President Bush’s campaign promises during last year’s presidential election.
