The Federal Trade Commission has put 200 firms engaging in the sale of consumers’ private financial information on notice that their activities are being closely monitored for any violation of the privacy provisions of the Gramm-Leach-Bliley Act. The agency said the warnings are meant to ensure that the firms are not obtaining consumers’ asset- and bank-account information under false pretenses, an illegal practice known as “pretexting.
