With the dust barely settled on the new year, debate is already raging over the District of Columbia’s efforts to rein in abusive lending. “It’s certainly an improvement over existing law, and it at least allows lenders to make prime loans safely in the District,” said Anne Canfield, executive director of the Consumer Mortgage Coalition, of a bill introduced into the city council last week.
