The Department of Housing and Urban Development is looking into the underwriting practices of five national mortgage lenders, which community groups say have resulted in discriminatory lending in black and Hispanic communities. The National Community Reinvestment Coalition, which brought representatives of its 700 grassroots organizations to Washington, DC, last week to lobby for tougher consumer protections, filed civil rights complaints with HUD against each of the lenders.
