After bringing its multifamily business to a grinding halt in the early 1990s, Freddie Mac’s efforts to rebuild the business have succeeded so much, it has finally surpassed rival Fannie Mae. Freddie reported a record $26.2 billion in new multifamily business transactions last year, up 10 percent over the $23.8 billion it did in 2004, besting Fannie, which turned in its second-best year total of $25.6 billion in multifamily business.
