The Department of Housing and Urban Development this week modified its rules on FHA closing costs in a move designed to better “align its business process with industry practice.” Mortgage Letter 2006-04 eliminated an existing list of specific fees that FHA lenders can charge borrowers, for items such as appraisals, inspections and credit reports. The new policy merely instructs lenders to charge “customary and reasonable costs necessary to close the mortgage.”
