Reporting of suspected or actual mortgage fraud is now mandatory for Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac after years of informal reporting to the Office of Federal Housing Enterprise Oversight and other law enforcement agencies. OFHEO said formalizing the practice in a final rule published on July 28 in the Federal Register would help the GSEs tighten their internal policies and procedures for curbing mortgage fraud.
