FHA mortgage servicers that have spotty records in trying to mitigate losses on defaulted loans now face the prospect of hefty monetary penalties – up to $300,000 per loan or more – under a final regulation adopted by the Department of Housing and Urban Development this week. HUD has had the authority since 1995 to levy fines of triple the FHA claim amount for servicers that fail to adhere to the agency’s loss mitigation requirements.
