In the biggest setback to hit Fannie Mae since the firm verged on insolvency in the early 1980s, the chief accountant for the Securities and Exchange Commission has directed the government-sponsored enterprise to restate its earnings from 2001 to mid-2004 because of errors in the way the firm accounted for derivatives.
