The Department of Justice and the Department of Treasury expressed conflicting views at a conference late last week concerning the need for federal regulation of mortgage brokers. The Federal Bureau of Investigation, an arm of the DOJ, made clear at a symposium sponsored by Women in Housing and Finance, a nonprofit professional association, that the lack of federal oversight of brokers has contributed to a purported epidemic of mortgage fraud in recent months.
