Although progress has been made over the years to improve the Department of Housing and Urban Development’s oversight of FHA lenders, a new audit report by the Government Accountability Office shows that opportunities exist to make it more effective. The GAO found that HUD’s homeownership offices, or HOCs, have been too lenient in granting direct endorsement authority to some FHA lenders and keeping them compliant.
