A surge in bulk mortgage insurance activity during the third quarter helped the private MI business weather a sharp downturn in primary market originations. As a group, private mortgage insurers reported a 6.1 percent decline in new primary MI written from the second quarter to the third, according to a new Inside Mortgage Finance ranking and analysis. That was only about one-third the 19 percent rate of decline in overall mortgage originations during that period.
