Mortgage banking operations turned decidedly less profitable in the third quarter of 2004 as shrinking margins and declining volumes combined with ongoing accounting hits on servicing. A new Inside Mortgage Profitability analysis of third-quarter earnings releases from 21 lenders, representing a broad cross-section of the industry, shows mortgage banking revenues sank 16.0 percent from the previous period.
