Federal bank regulators are guardedly optimistic that the interagency guidance on mortgage banking risks issued in early 2003 served its purpose as a wake-up call for better risk management practices in the industry. But examiners are looking for continuing progress, especially in light of their concerns about more risk-taking as lenders try to cope with a slowdown in mortgage demand.
