Wells Fargo was the top mortgage originator in 2003, although a lot of the company’s total production for the year didn’t show up in a new analysis of Home Mortgage Disclosure Act data. HMDA originations include only loans funded and underwritten by the reporting lender, which means most correspondent production is reported by the originating institution rather than the lender that ultimately ends up with the loan.
