The Bush administration is pushing Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac to leverage their investment in mortgage technology to do more business benefiting lower income borrowers and targeted communities. The Department of Housing and Urban Development recently published a proposed rule that would set more aggressive affordable housing goals for the two government-sponsored enterprises. Agency officials argue that Fannie and Freddie have lagged behind private lenders in providing mortgage financing
