Automated underwriting appears to be taking root in the two major government-sponsored mortgage-insurance programs, driven largely by the FHA and VA underwriting capabilities of Freddie Mac’s Loan Prospector and Fannie Mae’s Desktop Underwriter. Officials at the Department of Housing and Urban Development estimate that 40 percent of FHA loans will be underwritten using an automated system this year, up from 29.9 percent in 2000.
