For the last decade, mortgage bankers have been under the assumption that higher volume in the conventional market means higher profits. But after taking a deeper look into the retail business, Peter Carroll, a director at financial services strategy and risk management consulting firm Mercer Oliver and Wyman, found that while first mortgages represent the largest source of business in terms of volume, they provide relatively little profit.
