Mortgage banking profits appeared to decline slightly in the third quarter, although there was no strong trend in either direction among the 10 companies that have so far released results for the period. An Inside Mortgage Profitability analysis of third-quarter earnings reports by banks with significant mortgage operations shows that mortgage banking profits were down 17.5 percent for the group from the previous period.
