A small $222 million savings bank owned by Wall Street giant Merrill Lynch was, pound-for-pound, the most profitable depository institution among banks and thrifts with over half of their assets in mortgages and mortgage-backed securities, according to an Inside Mortgage Profitability analysis of call report data from institutions with at least $50 million in assets.
