Countrywide Financial has developed a two-pronged strategy for sustaining profit growth in the mortgage market downturn that’s expected to occur in 2003. First, the California-based company plans to continue building its so-called diversification earnings – revenue from businesses other than its traditional mortgage banking enterprise. Second, it has spent much of the past year – one dominated by a historic flood of refinance business – building up its capabilities for capturing purchase-money business.
