Last year Mortgage Guaranty Insurance Corp. took the bold step of limiting the amount of premium income it was willing to share with mortgage lenders via deep ceded captive reinsurance arrangements. The largest private mortgage insurer in the country paid a price for the change as its market share slipped from 24.8 percent for 2002 to 21.9 percent for 2003.
