Private mortgage insurance companies reported a stiff 27 percent drop in net new primary coverage written during the fourth quarter of 2003, a new Inside Mortgage Finance analysis reveals. That was measurably less severe than the estimated 45 percent slump in new mortgage originations, however, as the mortgage insurance business had a lot less to lose from the evaporation of the refinance market.
