Buyers of newly constructed single-family homes showed a marked preference for conventional mortgage financing during the first quarter of 2003, even though the new home sales price actually declined slightly. According to data released jointly by the Department of Commerce and the Department of Housing and Urban Development, 82 percent of new homes sold in the first quarter were financed with conventional mortgages,
