The modest drop in new mortgage production during the first quarter of 2003 fell heaviest on the retail origination channel, according to a new analysis and ranking by Inside Mortgage Finance. After hitting a record $355 billion in the fourth quarter of last year, industry-wide retail loan originations declined by 8.7 percent in the first three months of 2003, to an estimated $324 billion.
