In a sign of the good times rolling through the mortgage industry these days, Fannie Mae this week reported record-breaking earnings for the first quarter of the year. The government-sponsored enterprise reported operating net income of $1.24 billion for the first quarter of 2001 – an amount that represented a sizeable 16.6 percent increase over the earnings posted a year earlier.
