The Department of Housing and Urban Development will soon consolidate all investigations of predatory and discriminatory lending claims, as well allegations of bias in rental housing, under a new enforcement arm. The new office’s mission is to build cases against lenders and landlords suspected of violating the Fair Housing Act. Its function, however, will be a departure from HUD’s current practice of acting based on formal individual complaints and agency referrals.
