A long awaited General Accounting Office report on predatory lending is threatening to provoke more controversy over federal preemption and weaken industry confidence in widely used anti-predatory lending measures. Presented during a Senate Special Committee on Aging hearing last week, the GAO report urged Congress to provide the Federal Reserve Board with clear authority to supervise and take enforcement action against mortgage companies owned by financial and bank holding companies.
