The New York State Banking Department has broadened the prohibited bases for lending discrimination under the state’s fair lending law. Last month, the department warned creditors doing business in the state that denying credit on the basis of an applicant’s “sexual orientation” or “military status” would be considered an illegal discriminatory practice.
