The Department of Housing and Urban Development and the Federal Trade Commission last week put mortgage servicers on notice that they can no longer be lax about RESPA compliance. The two agencies announced a joint $40 million settlement with Fairbanks Capital Corp., the largest servicer of subprime loans in the country.
