Financial institutions have been told to take preventive measures and warn consumers about fraudulent advertisements for mortgages and other consumer loans in small town newspapers. The Federal Deposit Insurance Corp. issued the alert on July 31, urging banks and thrifts to be on the lookout for suspicious loan ads that carry logos of financial institutions to make them look legitimate.
