A House-Senate conference committee has begun drafting a final bankruptcy reform bill. Although both the House and Senate overwhelmingly approved the bill, two controversial provisions continue to divide lawmakers. A provision sponsored by Sen. Herbert Kohl, D-WI, limiting the amount of wealth debtors can shield from creditors through homestead exemptions, has lawmakers from four homestead states up in arms.
