Strong legislation and closer scrutiny of a bank’s involvement in predatory lending as part of a Community Reinvestment Act performance exam can help curb abusive lending practices, according to a new ACORN study. Federal and state lawmakers, as well as local officials, should pass strong anti-predatory lending legislation to protect lower-income and minority communities from abusive lending practices, the study said.
