Defense and plaintiff lawyers are closely watching legislation in Congress aimed at curbing class action abuse by allowing multi-state class action lawsuits to be shifted to federal courts. The bill, "Class Action Fairness Act," would prevent so-called coupon abuses by which some plaintiff lawyers collect huge chunks of a class-action settlement as their legal fee, leaving fewer benefits to their clients.
